How does work history affect SSDI eligibility in Illinois?

When applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in Illinois, your work history plays a major role in whether you qualify. SSDI is designed for people who have paid into the Social Security system — so your past employment and earnings determine your eligibility.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Understanding Work Credits

SSDI eligibility is based on “work credits.” You earn up to 4 credits per year depending on how much you earn. In 2025, you get 1 credit for every $1,730 in wages or self-employment income, up to 4 credits annually.

How many credits do you need?

  • Most applicants need 40 total credits, with 20 earned in the last 10 years
  • Younger workers may need fewer credits, depending on their age when they became disabled

Work History Details That Matter

When evaluating your SSDI claim, SSA looks at:

  • Length of time worked: How many years you’ve contributed to Social Security
  • Recency of work: When you last worked and paid into the system
  • Type of work: Jobs that were covered by Social Security (not all work counts)
  • Earnings: Your reported income must meet the credit threshold

A strong, recent work history generally supports your SSDI application. Gaps in employment, jobs not covered by Social Security, or insufficient earnings can result in a denial.

Self-Employment and Part-Time Work

You can earn work credits through self-employment, but you must file taxes and pay Social Security taxes on your income. Part-time work may qualify if your earnings meet the credit thresholds.

What If You Don’t Have Enough Credits?

If your work history doesn’t meet SSDI requirements, you might be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) instead — a separate program for people with limited income and resources, regardless of work history.
